Phonics Lesson 16

Learning objective: 

To read/write grapheme/phoneme /r/ and segment and blend cvc words


Revisit/review: 

Go through all the sounds learnt so far with the flash cards - s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, ck, ck, e, u.

Play the 'tic tac toe', 


You may need to teach the game first if the children do not know how to play it.
Children to work in pairs and each has one of the sounds learnt so far to play with. Repeat with other sounds if there is time.


Teach: 

Teach /r/ using objects beginning with /r/ 
This is rrrrred, this is a rrrocket, this is a rrrring

Use the Jolly phonics action.  Pretend to be a puppy holding a piece of rag, shaking head from side to side, and say rrrrrr.
  
All the children to do the action and say the sound. Make sure each child is saying the sound correctly.


Skywrite the letter /
r/ You could also get children to sit in a circle and write the sound on each other's back so they can really feel it.

Practise:

Children to play 'Find it'

Use 3 paper cups and write a selection of the following words on each cup. Hide an object under one of the cups. The child must read the word and then lift the cup to see if they can find the object.
Children could work in pairs playing this game. Make sets of 3 cups for each pair of children. They can all swap over. 

  1. run
  2. rag
  3. rid
  4. rip
  5. red
  6. rack
  7. rap
  8. rest
  9. rust
  10. rim


Apply:

Play word thief with the following sentence.

'It is a red pig on a mat'

Write the sentence on a sentence strip. Read it together and then cut it into words. Ask the children if they can remember what the sentence was. Rearrange the sentence together. Ask the children to close their eyes. Take a word away and then ask them to open their eyes. Which word is missing? Repeat several times.

Ask each child to write the sentence on a whiteboard.

Send Home:

A list of words to practice with a parent. The aim being fast blending to automacy.
